Maintenance & care

Winter care for artificial pitches and MUGAs

How to protect an artificial pitch or MUGA through autumn and winter, from leaf fall and moss to frost, and what to leave to a specialist.

One of the biggest reasons for choosing an artificial surface is that it keeps going when grass pitches are closed. Autumn and winter are when that pays off, but they are also when the surface needs the most attention. A little care through the colder months keeps bookings running and stops small problems becoming expensive ones in spring.

Autumn: stay on top of leaves

Leaves and other organic matter are the biggest threat to an artificial pitch in autumn. Once they break down they turn into fine material that works into the infill, holds moisture, blocks drainage and feeds moss and algae. Clearing leaves regularly, before they rot, is the single most useful thing a facility can do at this time of year. A blower or a leaf collector works well; heavy raking can disturb the infill.

Watch the damp, shaded areas

Edges, corners and anywhere shaded by trees or buildings stay wet for longer through winter. That is where moss and algae take hold first. Keep an eye on these areas and treat early, as it is far easier to stop growth than to remove it once it has spread.

Frost and snow

Keep brushing

Regular brushing matters just as much in winter. It keeps fibres upright, spreads infill back into high-wear areas and helps the surface dry out between sessions. If your team is short on time, a maintenance plan can be scheduled before you open or around your bookings.

Plan a spring reset

Even with good winter care, most pitches benefit from attention once the weather improves. Spring is a good time for a deep clean and decompaction, an infill check and a look at lines and seams, so the surface is ready for the busy summer months.
