How to choose a sports surface maintenance contractor

What schools, councils and clubs should look for in a sports surface maintenance contractor, from SAPCA membership and DBS checks to reporting and contracts.

An artificial pitch or MUGA is a significant investment, and the contractor who maintains it has a direct effect on how long it lasts. Choosing the right one is worth a little time. These are the questions we suggest schools, councils, clubs and facility managers ask.

Are they SAPCA members?

SAPCA, the Sports and Play Construction Association, is the recognised trade association for the sports and play facility industry in the UK. Its members are vetted, and membership categories show which specialisms a company is approved for. Envirosport is a SAPCA Approved Ancillary Contractor for maintenance. You can see our SAPCA profile.

Are they safe to have on your site?

If your surface is at a school, nursery or other site used by children, ask whether the team holds enhanced DBS checks and what safety accreditations the company holds. Envirosport operatives are enhanced DBS checked, and we hold SafeContractor accreditation.

Do they understand your surface?

2G, 3G, 4G, macadam and landscaped artificial grass all need different care. A good contractor should be able to explain what your specific surface needs and why, rather than offering the same service for everything. See our guide to 2G, 3G and 4G pitches.

Will you know what was done?

You should get a clear record of every visit. At Envirosport, every appointment comes with a signed job sheet and photos of the completed work uploaded to our software the same day, and you can report repairs and request appointment changes through the same system. That record is useful for budgeting, for governors and committees, and for preparing for inspections and tests.

Will they work around you?

Maintenance should fit around your bookings and timetable, not the other way round. Ask about flexible scheduling, early starts and emergency call-outs for damage.

Do you have to sign a contract?

Some contractors tie you into long agreements. We can quote for a single visit or ongoing work, and our maintenance plans need no contract. We would rather keep your business by doing a good job. And before you commit to anything, ask for a survey: every Envirosport project starts with a free, no-obligation survey and an honest, detailed quote.

Every job starts with a free site survey.

Tell us about your surface and we will give you honest advice and a clear, detailed quote. One-off visits or a regular plan, nationwide.
