Signs your artificial pitch needs a deep clean

The tell-tale signs that an artificial pitch or MUGA needs a professional deep clean and rejuvenation, and why it often saves the cost of replacement.

Artificial sports surfaces do not stay clean on their own. Dirt, dust, leaves, moss, algae and airborne contaminants settle into the fibres and infill every day. A little is normal. Left too long, it changes how the pitch drains, how it plays and how long it lasts.

Five signs it is time

What a deep clean involves

A professional deep clean uses specialist machinery to lift the infill out of the carpet, separate and remove the fine contamination, and return the cleaned infill to the surface. Fibres are brushed back upright, and moss and algae are treated so they do not return straight away. Where the infill has compacted, the surface is decompacted and the infill redistributed so it drains and plays properly again.

Clean before you replace

Many facilities assume a tired pitch needs replacing when a deep clean and rejuvenation would do the job at a fraction of the cost. A surface that still has good fibres and a sound base can often be brought back to a good standard and given years more use. We only recommend replacement when it is the most economical long-term option.

Timing it well

Deep cleans work best before contamination becomes heavy, so many facilities book one in spring or late summer and then keep the standard up with a regular plan. A one-off clean is also useful before an open day, a big event or a performance test. See our deep cleaning and reactive maintenance service for more detail.
